Computer user, that is. Not a geek by any means.
My home PC died a tragic death sometime today, and I came home to find a spectacular slashy blue/white/black pattern on the screen and rebooting gave me............nothing.
Okay, I have reached the limits of my computing ability.
I went to the computer room closet and pulled out this "experimental" Compaq, which is loaded with, of all things, Lindows OS, and managed to figure out all the connections and get on the Internet and beg you all for advice.
I am thinking that probably my HD died, and I will have to get a new HD, slave it to my old one, and fix it that way. But I don't know for sure. My plan right now is to ask some of our computer guys at work if they will help me for whatever cost they think it is worth, and to take in the whole shebang and turn it over to them. I hope they don't take advantage, because in my docs file I very stupidly have my (at least they are encoded) password files. I don't think anyone could figure out my coding system, but still.....
If one of the guys at work doesn't want to help me for some additional $$, I guess I will take it to CompUSA.
Does anyone here have any other suggestion, or would just like a chance to mock my hardware ineptitude? I have installed internal disk drives myself, but somehow a hard drive and slaving seems to be beyoned what I want to attempt on my own.

Sometimes people are nice. A friend at work here helped me fix my home computer. It was a video card that got blown. I didn't even know they had fans built right into the board, but he showed me how it had stopped fanning and the board overheated and blew. He got a new card installed for me and everything, and it only took a week.
So, my home computer is back online!

I guess I'm outed as a Buckley fan. What can I say? I admire his vocabulary.
